Laser Hair Removal

Laser hair removal can be used to significantly reduce unwanted hair growth on various areas of the face and body, often creating smooth, hair-free skin.

At Face Medical we find the need for laser hair removal differs from patient to patient, and even from men to women. Unwanted / excess hair growth can be considered unattractive by some, depending where on the face or body it appears. Improving this concern is a personal preference and this treatment can help to take away certain time consuming rituals, such as shaving or waxing, which often need to be carried out regularly.

Common areas for men to request laser hair removal includes: chest, back, neck, shoulders and stomach. Whereas women tend to want to treat: armpits, legs and bikini line.

Consultation

An examination of the area you want to treat is required as part of your consultation. We will need to assess both your skin and hair type before recommending this treatment, so we can accurately predict the type of results you’re likely to achieve. It’s important for us to understand your concerns before going ahead, as well as having an insight into your preferred treatment goal. We often carry out a patch test to get an idea of how your skin will respond to the laser, and we’ll also need information about your general health, medical history and lifestyle.

If you haven’t had this type of treatment before, the consultation process will help you to prepare for the procedure and know what to expect on the day. You’ll also be given a set of pre-treatment instructions, including: avoiding tanning, shaving the treatment area before and between treatments sessions instead of plucking or waxing and not bleaching the hair you wish to remove.

Laser Hair Removal Treatment Procedure

There are more and more laser treatments being introduced to aesthetic medicine. When we use it specifically for the removal of unwanted hair, we directly target the follicles.
A laser is a powerful, concentrated beam of light that is delivered to the surface of the skin. It is absorbed by the pigment (melanin) in the hair which then turns to heat and damages the follicles (the tube-shaped sacs that live within the skin at the base of the hair). This process does two things: disrupts the hair growth cycle causing the hair to fall out, and prevents new hair from being produced.

Due to the amount of follicles contained in the skin, which also depends on the size of the treatment area, a series of sessions are often required to ensure we address every one. Patients often require around 6 procedures before a significant result is reached, typically noticing around 10-25% less hair growth between treatments. The sessions are spaced out every 4-6 weeks as we need to factor in the hair growth cycle and allow for the skin to recover effectively.

Further Advice

Understanding realistic results is important. Whilst laser hair removal can provide a permanent solution to getting rid of unwanted hair, many patients will experience a significant reduction in regrowth. This can mean that although the treated area may not be completely hair free, the hair will grow back thinner, lighter and less conspicuous.
The type of results you’re likely to achieve can depend on a number of factors, with the best outcome occurring if your skin is lighter in tone and with darker hair.
We may not be able to perform this treatment on those with an active skin condition, or tattooed skin.

FAQs: Laser Hair Removal

How soon will I see results from laser hair removal?

Laser hair removal results will develop gradually as the hair growth cycle takes its course. In general treated follicles will release the hair after 3-5 days. You’ll need to complete the treatment course to achieve the final outcome, so smoother, hair-free skin may take a few months.

How long is each hair removal treatment?

The size and number of treatment areas will determine how long each hair removal session takes, often between 15 minutes and 2 hours.

Is this treatment for me?

Many people use laser hair removal to achieve long-term hair reduction and eliminate the need for regular shaving or waxing. This can be beneficial for perfecting your look, or making your daily routine a little easier, especially for the summer months or when going on holiday.

Can laser hair removal be used with other treatments?

Whilst laser hair removal is a stand-alone treatment for the removal of unwanted hair, it can work alongside other treatments for the face, skin and body to refine your overall appearance. If you’re looking to undergo any other aesthetic treatment make sure you speak with our experts as they will know what is safe.

What areas of the body can be treated?

Laser hair removal can be used on the face and body, including: chin, neck, chest, shoulders, arms, stomach, back, under arms, legs and bikini line. This treatment is not recommended for use on delicate skin, such as close to the eyes.

Is laser hair removal safe?

At Face Medical we are committed to patient safety, and wouldn’t use a treatment that could compromise the health and well-being of a patient. We are confident that laser hair removal is safe, and here’s why:

Laser hair removal is FDA approved

The Food and Drug Administration is an organisation that’s responsible for protecting public health. By having FDA approval it means that laser hair removal is not considered by inspectors to be acutely dangerous.

Laser hair removal is non-invasive

The laser is directed to the surface of the skin which then becomes absorbed into the follicle. This process does not require a cut made in the skin and is therefore non-invasive. A treatment of this kind is less likely to injure the skin or cause significant downtime / recovery time.

The risk of adverse side effects are minimal

As the concentrated beam of light turns to heat when absorbed by the pigment in the hair, the skin often becomes warm. This can mean that immediately after treatment the skin may look flushed. Patients should not be alarmed as we expect this to happen, and it will usually disappear within a few hours. During the consultation we will also discuss some complications that are a little more serious, but are very seldom experienced. These can include: blistering, crusting, skin discolouration and changes in skin texture. Many laser hair removal devices are fitted with a temperature control mechanism to prevent these complications from occurring, and at Face medical we always ensure the treatment is closely monitored throughout.

Only suitable candidates are recommended for treatment

Before proceeding with laser hair removal a comprehensive consultation takes place. For this type of treatment we’ll require the consultation to be carried out face-to-face so we can examine the area of concern. During this session we also take details of a patient’s medical history and general health to determine if there are any contraindications. Unsuitable candidates include: those with active skin conditions, open wounds, infection, pregnant or breastfeeding women.

Laser hair removal is only performed by trained practitioners

As previously mentioned, Face Medical is dedicated to patient safety, and we ensure that all practitioners are properly trained. Our team is experienced and sufficiently qualified to carry out the treatments we provide, including the devices that are required.
