Is laser hair removal safe?

Laser Hair Removal Bury

The use of lasers for cosmetic / aesthetic or medical purposes is on the rise due to their many benefits and precise treatment. At Face Medical we have begun using this type of procedure to address a common, frustrating concern; unwanted hair.

Laser hair removal provides an effective alternative to at-home hair removal solutions such as: shaving, waxing, hair removal creams and plucking. Whilst many people have already discovered the advantages of having undergone this procedure, there are many who aren’t yet benefitting from the results. We feel that one particular reason for this is knowing whether or not lasers are safe to use.

At Face Medical we are committed to patient safety, and wouldn’t use a treatment that could compromise the health and well-being of a patient. We are confident that laser hair removal is safe, and here’s why:

Laser hair removal is FDA approved

The Food and Drug Administration is an organisation that’s responsible for protecting public health. They do this by assessing the safety and efficacy of a range of treatments and medications, including: human and veterinary drugs, medical devices and biological products. They also help to ensure the safety of cosmetic products, products that emanate radiation and our food supply. By having FDA approval it means that laser hair removal is not considered by inspectors to be acutely dangerous.

Laser hair removal is non-invasive

The laser is directed to the surface of the skin which then becomes absorbed into the follicle. This process does not require a cut made in the skin and is therefore non-invasive. A treatment of this kind is less likely to injure the skin or cause significant downtime / recovery time.

The risk of adverse side effects are minimal

As the concentrated beam of light turns to heat when absorbed by the pigment in the hair, the skin often becomes warm. This can mean that immediately after treatment the skin may look flushed. Patients should not be alarmed as we expect this to happen, and it will usually disappear within a few hours. During the consultation we will also discuss some complications that are a little more serious, but are very seldom experienced. These can include: blistering, crusting, skin discolouration and changes in skin texture. Many laser hair removal devices are fitted with a temperature control mechanism to prevent these complications from occurring, and at Face medical we always ensure the treatment is closely monitored throughout.

Only suitable candidates are recommended for treatment

Before proceeding with laser hair removal a comprehensive consultation takes place. For this type of treatment we’ll require the consultation to be carried out face-to-face so we can examine the area of concern. During this session we also take details of a patient’s medical history and general health to determine if there are any contraindications.

Suitable candidates are those whose skin is in good condition, and have not waxed or plucked their unwanted hair. As treatments advance, we are better able to treat darker skinned patients, and also those with finer, fairer hair.

Unsuitable candidates include: those with active skin conditions, open wounds, infection, pregnant or breastfeeding women.

Laser hair removal is only performed by trained practitioners

As previously mentioned, Face Medical is dedicated to patient safety, and we ensure that all practitioners are properly trained. Our team is experienced and sufficiently qualified to carry out the treatments we provide, including the devices that are required. When we introduce a new procedure to the clinic, we make sure that all practitioners who are to perform it are properly trained and competent. This includes determining a good candidate and being able to provide patients with the right advice for all potential circumstances.
