Fluid Retention

Fluid retention, medically known as edema, refers to the abnormal accumulation of fluid within the body’s tissues, leading to swelling and discomfort. This condition occurs when the balance of fluids within the circulatory system is disrupted, causing an excess to leak into surrounding tissues. It can manifest in various parts of the body, including: legs, ankles, feet, hands, and abdomen.

Post-workout Muscle Fatigue

Post-workout muscle fatigue, also known as delayed onset muscle soreness (DOMS), is the sensation of discomfort and pain in the muscles that typically develops 12 to 24 hours after intense physical activity and can peak in severity 24 to 72 hours later. It’s a common occurrence, especially for individuals engaging in new or particularly strenuous exercises.

Cellulite

Cellulite is a common cosmetic concern characterised by the dimpled or lumpy appearance of skin, often likened to an orange peel. It typically occurs on the thighs, buttocks, and sometimes on the abdomen and arms. Contrary to popular belief, cellulite is not solely a result of excess body fat. It actually arises from a combination of factors.

Unwanted Hair

Unwanted hair can occur on any part of the face or body. It doesn’t have to mean that hair is growing in a place that is not considered the norm, but is simply just not preferred or is growing thicker than one would like. Many patients with unwanted hair feel it is the look / presence of the particular hair growth that causes an aesthetic concern, and treating it will help to tidy up their appearance.

Ageing Hands

The skin on the hands will often experience the same levels of ageing as the face. As well as losing collagen and elastin when production slows down, this area is also highly exposed to the environment, and UV rays.

The hands are in constant use throughout the day and often have more contact with harsh chemicals than any other part of the body. These factors can affect the condition of the skin’s surface, causing it to become fragile and dry. They often combine with a natural change in the internal structure which together, lead to the hands developing an aged appearance. Many people are aware that less collagen and elastin in the skin causes lost volume, thin skin and wrinkles. UV rays will speed up the rate at which these proteins break down, as well as causing cellular damage (a major contributor to age spots). It is these circumstances that cause the development of ageing hands, and their characteristically bony look with dark patches and prominent veins.

Overall Health & Well-Being

Food provides energy and nutrition in order for the body to function properly. Most people are conscious of what they eat, taking care to eat the right foods in the right proportions. Vitamins, minerals, fats, proteins and carbohydrates are the essential nutrients needed by the body in regular and sufficient amounts. A balanced diet is often the most effective way of getting these nutrients into the body, which are naturally absorbed and transported to the right place.

Ageing Skin On The Body

The loss of collagen and elastin is frequently talked about when we consider the subtle changes that our face experiences as we get older. It is well known that the decline of these substances leads to weak and thinning skin that becomes loose and wrinkled. These effects are not just confined to the skin on the face as skin covers the whole of the body, so it stands to reason that the same concerns will also affect the entire form.

Body Shape & Weight Gain

Just as everyone’s appearance is unique to them, so too is the shape of their body. It is usually a person’s genes that determines the way the body is formed, with lifestyle factors influencing changes in size, generally when a person gains or loses weight.

Gaining weight often results from having consumed more calories than the body expels, usually over a period of time. Excess energy will often turn to fat which can be stored in various areas of the face and / or body such as: under the chin, arms, breasts, stomach, hips, back, thighs, buttocks and knees, causing the body to become bigger in size. Alcohol, Ultra-Processed Foods and foods that are high in saturated fat, sugar and salt usually have a high calorie content and can contribute to unwanted fat when regular consumption leads to an excess of energy (calories) in the body. Regular exercise and movement can help with burning excess calories, using the energy before it gets a chance to turn to fat. Some people find that they gain weight as they age, which can occur as they become less active or hormones levels start to change.

Facial Thread Veins

Thread veins, often referred to as spider veins, are damaged veins visible on the face or the legs. Purple, red or blue in colour, these veins often twist and branch out to create web-like patterns, causing their sufferers to experience a loss in confidence and self-esteem. However it is only the red veins visible on the face we are able to treat on the face that are treatable with Short Wave Diathermy.

There are several risk factors associated with thread veins, including pregnancy, old age and obesity. Frequent exposure to the sun, regular consumption of alcohol and diagnosed skin conditions such as rosacea may also be responsible for the emergence of those on the face. Leg-based thread veins are usually attributed to venous insufficiency, a condition which causes blood to leak into the lower part of the vein and pool, instead of travelling directly to the heart.

Crucially, thread veins are not harmful but may be cause for some individuals to seek cosmetic intervention.

Campbell de Morgan Spots

Campbell de Morgan Spots, otherwise known as cherry angiomas or red moles, are small-to-medium growths that can form on several areas of the body. Notable for their circular red appearance, they vary in size and texture and may either feel lumpy or smooth to the touch. In most cases, Campbell de Morgan Spots tend to become more prominent with age, and often develop when we are in our thirties and beyond.

Campbell de Morgan Spots derive their redness from the blood vessels that they contain. They are usually seen as harmless, unless they alter in shape or begin to bleed spontaneously. These traits may be indicative of skin cancer.

Little is known about what causes Campbell de Morgan Spots, although they have been linked to genetics, underlying health conditions, environmental factors and pregnancy. Much of the time, these growths are benign, but many people seek to have them removed for cosmetic reasons.

Milia

Milium cysts, known collectively as milia, are tiny bumps that usually develop on the nose or the cheeks. White or yellow in colour, they emerge when keratin – a natural protein found in tissue, hair and nails – finds itself trapped underneath the skin.

It’s not uncommon for milia to present from birth, and many newborn babies are known to experience this skin condition with seemingly no trigger. In the majority of instances, newborn milia, which is largely contained to the face and scalp, disappears after a few months. This is also true of primary adult milia, especially in cases where bumps are located on the forehead and eyelids.

Other forms of milia have a more definite cause and are referred to as secondary milia. Secondary milia occurs as a result of damage, irritation or trauma to the skin. These may be triggered by an injury or even the use of a particular skincare product. They can also be much harder to shift.

Skin Texture

We understand that all skin is different. Skin type and texture not only varies from person to person, but also throughout our bodies. It is for this reason that we never apply a one-size-fits-all method, and instead, via consultation, work to devise a procedure that suits your skin perfectly. This includes using EndyMed as a way to improve the texture of your skin.

Ideally, our skin should be smooth and soft, however there are many factors which may prevent this from being the case, such as a natural loss of collagen, skin ageing or sun damage. These issues may be more prevalent in certain areas than others, meaning that any treatment designed to improve skin texture may need to be adjusted throughout the body.

At Face Medical we seek to enhance our clients’ natural beauty, and improving skin texture, using EndyMed, is a simple, effective and risk-free way to do this. Our thorough consultations mean that you can be comfortable in the knowledge that whatever your skin type, we will tailor the treatment to meet your exact needs and requirements.

Facial Skin Ageing

The effects of ageing can wreak havoc on your skin, no matter how well you take care of it. Over time, the levels of collagen, elastin, and hyaluronic acid (or HA) in the skin depletes. This results in dehydration and loss of elasticity. It is this that causes a whole host of concerns, including fine lines, wrinkles, and a dull complexion. This can detract from a previously youthful look, leading many patients to seek aesthetic correction.

View Condition

Ageing Skin

Our skin is often tight, firm, lifted and smooth in our youth, but as we age our structural proteins (collagen and elastin) can deplete and this causes the skin to become lax and sag. The natural effects of ageing can also lead our facial skin to look tired and dull, but amongst other treatments for ageing skin, Face Medical Clinic would like to introduce Ellansé as a possible solution.

Unwanted Fat

For some, traditional weight loss methods, even when following the strictest diets or vigorous exercise regime, just aren’t sufficient when it comes to shifting stubborn areas of fat from particular areas of the body. The long process and effort required to shift extra pounds can be disheartening, and in some cases, impractical when other factors, such as lifestyle, are considered.

View Condition

Skin Laxity

In our youth, our skin is tight, firm, and lifted. This is due to reserves of collagen and elastin, proteins essential for skin health and repair, deep within the inner layer, or dermis, of the skin. As we get older, our skin becomes less capable of producing elastin and collagen, and as levels within the skin deplete, the skin becomes prone to sagging or laxity. Skin laity is a natural part of the ageing process, however, this isn’t to say there is nothing that can be done to tighten the skin and achieve a more youthful look.

View Condition

Undefined Jawline

The unique beauty of our face is a result of the balance of our individual facial features. However, an undefined jawline can disrupt this facial harmony, resulting in a disproportionate look that prematurely ages the face. Whether a result of genetic factors, weight fluctuations, or the process of ageing, many patients seek aesthetic treatments for adding definition to a weaker jawline.

Misshapen Nose

A misshapen nose, or a bump on the nose, is known to seriously affect self-esteem. The nose is such a prominent feature of the face, and when photographs are taken from a profile angle, a dorsum bump or a misshapen bridge of the nose can produce an undesirable image.

Hollow Eyes

Hollow eyes, also known as ‘sunken eyes’ are a sign of ageing that can occur due to natural ageing, dehydration, or not getting enough sleep. The dark circles and deep, sunken appearance can leave you looking tired and unhealthy.

Menopause

Dry Skin

There are many triggers that contribute to dry skin, including environmental factors and medication. One thing is for certain; dry skin can affect more than just appearance, and can result in an itchy, cracked, and painful complexion.

View Condition

Aging Eyes

The eyes can often be one of the first facial features to show visible signs of aging, and can also be a hotspot for a multitude of problems due to the frequent movement in the area.

Problems with the appearance of aging eyes usually come in the form of eye-bags (bags underneath the eye), crows’ feet, or drooping eyelids.

View Condition

Wrinkles & Fine Lines

Wrinkles and fine lines are one of the most obvious signs of aging skin. Repetitive movement and a decrease in skin laxity is inevitable as the skin ages. This results in skin that is less able to repair itself from the damage caused as a result of everyday usage and exposure to sunlight and pollutants in the atmosphere. Wrinkles can often detract from a healthy-looking, youthful complexion, and require collagen-boosting or skin tightening treatments to improve their appearances.

View Condition

Wrinkly Neck

A wrinkly neck occurs as a result of skin laxity. Our skin naturally produces collagen, which helps to repair and keep skin supple and elastic. As we age, the production of collagen in the skin decreases. This leaves the skin less able to repair itself, resulting in visible signs of ageing such as wrinkles or loose skin. Wrinkly neck is a common symptom of ageing in the neck area, and can be worsened by rapid weight loss or gain and sun damage to the skin.

View Condition

Crepey Neck

The skin around your neck is particularly delicate and thin, which is why this is one of the first places to wrinkle and show the signs of ageing, along with the hands and the eyes. This skin also tends to be fairly dry in comparison to the skin on your face, causing the onset of crepe-like, weathered wrinkles. Unfortunately, this is just one of the disadvantages that come with ageing, as collagen and elastin within your skin gradually depletes over time. Consequently, there is less support for your skin and sagging occurs. Numerous factors can speed up this process, including improper skin care, toxins beneath the skin tissues and the redistribution of fat.

View Condition

Oily Skin/Large Pores

If you happen to have rather oily skin or large pores, then it’s unlikely that there’s a solid reason for this, other than the simple fact that it comes down to your genetics. With that said, there are some other factors that might contribute, including hormone changes, particularly in women.

View Condition

Crow’s Feet

The area around your eyes tends to be far more delicate than the rest of your face due to the thickness of the skin. The skin on your eyelids is in fact the thinnest compared to anywhere else on your body, at just 0.5mm in thickness on average. This is why your eyes often tend to show the signs of ageing much sooner than other areas of your face. The skin is more susceptible to wrinkles and fine lines as a result of sun damage and the effects of ageing over time.

View Condition

Pigmentation

Pigmentation refers to discolouration of the skin. This can appear as lighter or darker areas that develop, which can vary in shape and size. Most commonly, the skin is affected by hyperpigmentation whereby darkened patches appear which usually develop on the face, hands, forearms and chest. Age spots are usually fairly small and round, whereas melasma, post-inflammatory pigmentation and sun damage can be more widespread.

The effects of pigmentation are predominantly an aesthetic concern as its noticeable appearance makes it an unwelcome feature, and may even impact self-confidence.

Excessive Sweating

Excessive sweating is a condition that is more common than you might think, affecting between 1 and 3 in every 100 people here in the UK. Medically referred to as“Hyperhidrosis”, excessive sweating can develop at any age, affecting either the entire body or just certain areas. The most common areas to be affected tend to be the armpits, groin, palms, soles of the feet, chest and face.

Lipstick Lines

Lipstick bleed lines, also known as smoker’s lines, are a sign of ageing that can occur due to gravity, natural ageing, a downward mouth appearance, or the effects of smoking. These lines etch the lips and may extend vertically from the lips, too. Smoker’s lines get their name from and are more likely to form in smokers, due to the repeated pursing of the lips when we draw from the cigarette. In addition to this, smoking also breaks down the production of collagen, which in turn increases the appearance of wrinkles and causes the skin to thin.

View Condition

Thin Lips

Some people are born with naturally thin lips, a result of genetics and DNA; however, thin lips can also occur as a result of age. As the skin loses its elasticity, which occurs when collagen production slows, this can have a damaging effect of the lips, causing them to lose firmness and take on a thinner appearance. This may be worsened by lack of care to the lips, such as through sun exposure, smoking, or dehydration. Regardless of the causes, thin lips can age an otherwise youthful face. With plump lips growing in popularity, many patients are seeking aesthetic means of achieving a fuller look.

View Condition

Sagging Skin

Sagging skin is often one of the most obvious signs of ageing, and can be far more damaging to the overall appearance of the face than fine lines and wrinkles. Sagging skin occurs when not enough collagen is produced to accommodate for the natural movement of the skin, causing it to droop and sag as it is less able to repair itself as the connective tissues are stretched. While this is a natural occurrence in the ageing process, it can be worsened by prolonged sun exposure or rapid weight gain or loss.

Fortunately, Face Medical Clinic offers a range of treatments designed to improve the appearance of sagging skin. Dermal fillers may be used to plump up affected areas with impressive results. However, treatments that kick-start an increase in the production of collagen are recommended for optimal impact on sagging skin.

Acne Scarring

Fighting acne can be a traumatic experience. However, ridding skin of blemishes is half the battle. All too often, acne can leave permanent scarring in its wake. Acne scarring can take several different forms, dependent on the condition of the skin and the type of acne suffered.

View Condition

Stretch Marks

Most people will suffer from stretch marks at some point in their life. Taking the form of streaks or lines, stretch marks often appear red or pink at first, and fade to a silvery-white colour over time. They occur on the surface of the skin, and are most common in areas where fat is stored, such as the stomach, thighs, or buttocks. However, stretch marks can occur in any part of the body where the skin is prone to stretching. Stretch marks are a result of a tearing in the upper layers of skin, allowing the deeper layers to show through.

Rosacea

Rosacea is a skin condition that is more common that most people believe, although it can still be a difficult condition to live with. Rosacea mainly affects the facial area, and is characterised by the reddening of the skin. While rosacea usually leaves the sufferer with a flushed appearance, it can also sometimes cause a burning or stinging sensation, permanent redness, pustules in the skin, or lead to blood vessels in the skin becoming visible.

View Condition

Acne

Acne is a blanket term for a large number of skin conditions that cause spots or pimples on the skin, usually on the face, back and chest. Due to the many factors that can cause acne, it affects a large number of the population, and can be unsightly, embarrassing, or even cause discomfort in some cases.

Jowls

At Face Medical Clinic, we treat many different conditions, including sagging jowls. Jowls are the name for the fleshy part of skin just below the cheek area. As the skin ages, jowls may become more prominent, or begin to visibly droop below the jawline. This is largely due to a decrease in the elasticity of the skin as we age, which prevents its ability to self-repair and causes the sagging of the skin. Sagging jowls can be a major cause for concern, as the presence of jowls can prematurely age the appearance of the face. Ageing skin often results in sagging jowls, and is largely determined by genetic predisposition, but can be worsened by damage to the skin, for example, via sun exposure, or extreme weight loss, as these factors have an impact on skin elasticity.
